Title: Toasting and Talking
Author: Fox Margolis
Scene: Holodeck
Time: Following “C’Mon Baby, Light My Bonfire”
After taking a long and satisfying swig of the wine cooler, Fox made a neat little wedge in the ground to hold the bottle.
She then turned to her fellow crew mates, Lily and February, who had begun to occupy themselves with the campfire marshmallows. Fox held out her hands and wiggled her fingers, indicating that she wanted in on the fun.
Lily leaned over and handed her a skewer that already had three marshmallows lined up on it.
“Thanks,” Fox said. She extended the skewer out over the fire and watched the treats cook up nice and slowly.
“Toasty or burned?” Lily then asked.
Fox turned back to her. “What?”
February laughed and entered the conversation. “Lily thinks you can tell something about a person by the way he or she likes marshmallows.”
Fox then laughed herself. “Well, toasty. Nice and golden brown on the outside makes them perfectly gooey on the inside.”
“Oh, my kind of girl,” Bru replied, as Lily wrinkled her nose, indicating her preferences.
“Well, then here you go.” Fox pulled the skewer out of the fire, and on it were three perfectly toasted marshmallows.
February eagerly grabbed one and munched on it, enjoying the melding of the crunchy outside and gooey inside. Fox quickly joined her.
Understanding Lily’s preference for a more toasted treat, Fox then handed out the third marshmallow to N’Dura. The Klingon, who had just finished the ribs, shook her head. She held up her hands and wiggled her fingers, in mock imitation of Fox from a few moments ago. Only N’Dura’s hands were still covered with barbeque sauce.
“Finger lickin’ good,” N’Dura said with a wicked smile.
Fox shook her head, though there was a smile on her face. It was good to be relaxing, Fox thought to herself, here among friends, with no worries in the world.
And with that peaceful thought, Fox grabbed another two marshmallows and set out to enjoy the rest of the evening.
